Description of the database

What fields make up the database?

  • For each citation: fields include all authors, title of article, volume and issue number, pages, keywords, and the type (e.g., article, note, other) of paper;
  • Abstracts and Author addresses, where provided by the authors, are included in separate searchable fields.

What is included with the Papyrus version of the database?

  • An "output format" is provided (see figure 4 and 5) for the Macintosh version (DOS/Windows version in preparation). When imported into Papyrus, an author can use it to generate automatically a "Literature Cited" section consistent with the formatting standards outlined in the Aquatic Mammals "Instructions for Authors" (see disclaimer, below).
  • A glossary with all the commonly used latin species names (see figure 6).
  • A keyword list making extensive use of Papyrus' unique hierarchical keywords (see figure 7, Mac version only feature).
  • Companion "Installation Help" files to help guide the user through file installation so Papyrus can find and use the database and output format.

I don't own Papyrus.
Can I nevertheless use the database ?

  • You can use the Papyrus for Macintosh Limited Version for basic use with the Aquatic Mammals database. The Limited Version is fully functionable up to to 200 references. With the Aquatic Mammals database, which contains more than 500 references you can use the Limited Version in read only mode. You will not be able to make any changes or additions to the database.

Acknowledgements

  • The references to the latest Aquatic Mammals publications contain abstracts which were provided electronically by Dagmar Fertl via MARMAM and ECS-all. For checking the entries I have used our library copies and the information provided by Jaap van der Toorn on the EAAM website. Many thanks to both of them who contribute a big part to this Papyrus database.
    Big thanks go as well to Jeanette Thomas, Editor of Aquatic Mammals for support of this database project.

Disclaimer: the compiler of the database and the output format used to generate a Aquatic Mammals "Literature Cited" section advises potential users that there is always the potential for errors or omissions in the database or the output format. It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure any "Literature Cited" sections created with these files follow Aquatic Mammals and the guidance detailed in the "Instructions for Authors". For the final word on the correct format to use, contact Jeannette Thomas, Editor, Aquatic Mammals. If you find an omission or error in either the Papyrus database or the output style, please contact Jan Herrmann, so it can be corrected.
