Interns/Volunteers in South Africa

The Centre for Dolphin Studies (CDS) is an independent research and education organisation, operating in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Though the CDS is completely independent, it has associations with two South African Universities.
Although we receive both governmental and public funds, we are predominantly self-funded, through our whale and dolphin watching operation. The CDS is the only such institute in South Africa. We are the only institute recognised and endorsed by the MTN Whale Route, the award winning NGO, which promotes whale watching in South Africa.
We have accommodated volunteers and interns in the past, but on an ad hoc basis. Now we announce our new volunteer and intern programme. Volunteers and interns are invited to participate in our

• numerous research programmes;
• dolphin (humpback and bottlenose) photo ID;
• migrating humpback whale counts;
• the influence of boat based whale watching on southern right whales;

Our educational programmes; teaching school children about the marine environment; building a whale culture for the community (business opportunities for indigent communities - helping them 'buy in' to tourism and whale watching). Some of the above may seem strange, but marine conservation in Africa relies on community involvement.
Unfortunately, we can't do this for free, so we charge a small fee, which includes accommodation and food. If you're interested, please contact us: cdswhale@worldonline.co.za
