Amazon fieldworkers wanted

Mamirauá, 23. September 2001 - With Dr Vera da Silva, INPA, Brazil, I run a long-term study of the Amazon river dolphin, or boto (Inia geoffrensis), in a Reserve called Mamirauá, near the town of Tefé in Brazil. The study has been operational for 7 years, and is based on a floating platform in the jungle, with laboratory and living accommodation. The project has its own boats, and operates every day of the year.
Much of the daily fieldwork, which involves studying around 200 individually-marked dolphins, is carried out by people who join the project for 6-8 months. They live on the raft in a team of 3-5 people, spending roughly half the day on the water and half working on laptop computers, entering and analysing data. All living expenses are provided, as is transport to and from Manaus, and a monthly payment of around 75-100 USD.
We are now seeking suitably-qualified people to join the team, starting in December 2001 and at intervals during 2002 and 2003. The requirements are:

• Age: 20+
• Language skills: moderate Portuguese or fluent Spanish, plus moderate English
• Computer skills: experience with EXCEL and WORD
• Availability: minimum 6 months, possibly with a short break in the middle
