Marine Research and Education Fund of Norway (MAREFA)

Marine Research and Education Fund of Norway (MAREFA) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promote conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in Northern Norway through research, education and community involvment. MAREFA has been working in Andenes since 2010, and got officially established in 2012. Our first objective was increasing the knowledge of cetaceans in the area of the Vesteralen islands through research and education projects. In order to achieve our goals of conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in Northern Norway, we started working bottom-up: Our objective is capacity building in the community at all levels and involving the community in the process of developing actions for mitigating human impacts on the marine and coastal environment and peatlands.
